Williamsburg Winter

berriesWilliamsburg has a pretty mild winter most years. It could be brisk, with a little snow, and likely some rain. But that doesn’t mean you should stay home — It’s still a great way to take advantage of all Williamsburg has to offer.

The main advantage is that you’ll get to indulge in Colonial Williamsburg without crowds and get time to really talk to staff about their experiences in the Historic Area. Remember, the people who come to work at Colonial Williamsburg are really passionate about what they do – and sometimes during the high season, they don’t get to share their knowledge in depth with visitors. If you are a history buff or love one particular aspect of colonial life, winter is a great time to dig in and find out more.

For example, if you are interested in military history, winter would be a good time to visit the Magazine in the center of town and visit the men who passionately research the lives of the colonial militia. They can tell you a lot about cleaning weapons, storing gunpowder in the winter, typical chores and repairs that would accompany a military lifestyle. You can also make a stop in at the Gunsmith shop as well.

For other interests, visit the milliner or the print shop and find out how their trades were affected by changes during the late 1770s. The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum and the DeWitt Wallace Gallery have an array of exhibits as well.

Plan a trip to Williamsburg

sheepandsnowDuring the winter, art galleries are open and you are free to browse at your leisure. Several coffee shops near Merchant’s Square like Aroma’s and the Blue Talon, that will be glad to give you a lift with a hot mocha latte so you can continue your exploration of town. Winter concerts and events pepper the calendar so be sure to check local listings as you plan your visit.

Besides the in-town amenities, don’t forget that Williamsburg is visited for its shopping nearly as much as for its history. The Premium Outlets are open year round and there are great deals to be had during the holiday season as well as after. So, happy hunting and enjoy a rejuvenating visit to Williamsburg!
