People from all over (mainly the East Coast) gather to kick off the holiday season with Grand Illumination at Colonial Williamsburg. It’s a great tradition that includes live music and refreshments, and the crowds on a cold night actually make it more festive.
If it’s your first time, make plans to come to Williamsburg well in advance – it’s a popular weekend and everything books up fast. Come prepared to be busy that weekend because there’s a Holiday Parade down Duke of Gloucester Street, and the Christmas Homes Tour, as well as Grand Illumination. You’ll be busy – and it’s usually cold – so make sure you bring your energy and a warm coat. The Grand Illumination celebration is free and open to the public, some of the other events require tickets – so make sure to decide your itinerary in advance.
The whole city is abuzz with movement – things to do and see, getting some Christmas shopping in, and enjoying the camaraderie that Grand Illumination creates. The best way to navigate it is to plan ahead and have a good local insider to go to for advice. That’s one of the great things about staying at a Bed and Breakfast in Williamsburg—someone who can give you the inside scoop on things like where to park, best places to eat and ways to make the most of your visit.
We’re so glad you are thinking about joining us for this holiday kickoff. It’s a lot of fun and a wonderful annual tradition to share. You’ll be an expert Grand Illumination guest in no time!
